Alke Schmidt

1. Please tell us about the work you will be showing in the 2010 E17 Art Trail?

I'll be showing a small sneak preview of the solo show I'll be having at Signal Gallery in Shoreditch in October (http://www.signalgallery.com/ opens 7 October 6-9 PM). It's so sneak that it's not even listed in the Trail Guide! I didn't think I'd be able to take part in the Trail this year (I'm still working frantically to get all the work finished for the Signal show...), but then it seemed to be such a shame not to take part at all... so Kirsten Schmidt kindly offered me a little space in her venue, Lot One Ten Antiques (venue 34 on the map). Seems kind of fitting as we're both called Schmidt and many people confuse us ...

2.How many times have you taken part in the Trail?
Every year since it started! So that makes this year the 6th time.

3. What kind of things inspire you to create art?
Aesthetics and politics: Things that I find - e.g. patterend fabrics, old prints (eg attached jpeg), hubcaps, newspaper images......, and things that I find unjust - social and environmental injustices.

4. What challenges (if any) do you face in preparing yourself and your work for the Trail?
Time

5. Who are your favourite artists?
Oohh, loads - and the list changes all the time too, although Louise Bourgeois, Sigmar Polke and C.D. Friedrich are all-time favourites. Other current favourites include Annette Messager, Van Gogh, Grayson Perry, Amar Kanwar, and Tacita Dean.

6. Please tell us two things you really like about Walthamstow?
  • The green spaces (including our allotment!)
  • The creative community
  • The Wiliam Morris Gallery .
 Oops, that's three already.

7. Please tell us one thing you wish Walthamstow had?
Guess what: A cinema!!!!!!!
