As well as the Big Lunch on 1 June, Poets Corner (embracing Milton Rd,
Browns Rd, Tower Hamlets Rd, Byron Rd and Aubrey Rd) has entered this year’s Art
Trail. One “happening” is “Poems For Sale”, where residents have estate agent
signs in their front gardens. However we’ll be replacing the “For Sale”, “Sold”
and “For Let” signs with poems that are local, famous or international. We have about 30 residents who will
be taking part in the 'Poets for Sale' signs and they have been sponsored by
estate agents Churchill Estates and put together by residents artist and
volunteers. Our idea emerged from the 2012 Art Trail where poems were displayed in estate agent windows. We used this concept for our 'Poets for Sale' show.

How have you been preparing for this year's trail?
We have about 3-4 groups of Residents Associations run by passionate and
committed people who meet regularly to look after this part of
Walthamstow. The groups have been going
for a few years but wanted to re-brand using the poetry names of some of the
streets, the Art Trail gave us an opportunity to display poems with art and
celebrate together.
Could you tell us about an an artist/ artwork that particularly inspires you?
We are inspired by the names of our streets and they have been a source
for residents throughout as it now transpires. We also have some creative artists and poets who grew up and/or live in
our area.
How does inhabiting a community like Walthamstow help your
practice?
This is a communal initiative and we are able to feed and maintain
constant creativity with the people who live in this part of Walthamstow. The Rose and Crown is our local meeting hub
and residents are generally friendly - we have been doing several activities
such as choir singing with local schools, Halloween and street parties which
has been very cultural and creative in one way or another.
What are you most looking forward to during the E17 Art Trail this year
?
We are looking forward to our own entry but also to all the others. We
are proud to have a Free Library, The Howard Road House, Dominc Kendrell, Humna
Mustafa as well as other artists from our own neighbourhood taking part.
