The E17 Designers are a group of artists/designer/makers, so who knows what they have all been making. Come and see on Friday 13th June at The Grove Cafe/La Ruana! Hidden down the cobbled mews of Hoe Street behind another hidden gem, the old Granada/EMD cinema. The members sign up to the website for the year and we have about 40-50 regulars and then during the year, if we have spaces, new people join. We have two lovely new fashion designers, GLOW and MOIX, who have recently signed up, and they are joining regulars including Girl with Beads, cool ceramic designer Alex Garnett and jewellery from Carol Zilla, Oh you pretty things and Beyond Beading.
How have you been preparing for this year's trail?
By getting excited! We cannot believe (having taken a year off) how many new people will be on the Art Trail this year...we have scaled down our show as many of the makers are hosting their own events this year so it is great to see little "trails" popping up all over.
Could you tell us about an an artist that particularly inspires you?
Well, this E17 Designer has always been inspired by artists such as Sonia Delaunay, Sister Corita, Hopper, and lovely Grayson Perry to name a few.
How does inhabiting a community like Walthamstow help your practice?
This E17 Designer probably does more coffee drinking in the community of E17, rather than "practice"!....if it wasn't for being part of this community and working with people like Artillery and all the many others who have pushed forward the creative strands that make this amazing trail happen, then E17 Designers wouldn't exist. We would all be working in our lonely garrets, rather than inviting people to see, touch, buy and eat all the lovely goods on display all over Walthamstow in the next fortnight.
Do you have a personal highlight from the past 9 years of the E17 Art Trail?
Oh it was definitely the "lock-in" at St Barnabas Church after their opening party in 2010. We were dancing in the aisles to Northern Soul well after closing time. A beautiful arts and crafts building, with amazing art works that decorate the interior just for the art trail.
